USING THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS

The present continuous is about the activities we're doing right now (at the moment). For example, take a look at this picture:


They are playing soccer, they aren't working or dancing.

USING THE VERB BE

The verb be is mainly used to identify things. For instance, we say:

He is a doctor (We're identifying a person's profession)
He is a 23.(We're identifying a person's age)
He is from Bogotá  .(We're identifying a person's hometown)
